After twelve days of secret, tense, and constant negotitations Le Gran Corrida has ended with a nominal white peace and a permanent succession plan for the Spanish Monarchy. Celebrations were had in Rome, Madrid and even Lisbon when the peace was declared. Spain has much rebuilding to do, but the time for that will come. The claimants Carlos and Alfonso arrived in The Vatican under their own guards and stalwarts on 26 December. The men were divested of said guards and immediately imprisoned in the Castel Sant'Angelo by The Sacred Band. Sources inside the pseudo-conclave also said that the claimants were stripped and shackled to the floor of their shared cell, whilst the pope forced them to tell the truths of the matters regarding the events leading up to the war and what happened during. After this they remained chained and were forced over the next several days to negotiate an end to the conflict, with both adamantly refusing to do anything in the beginning. Rations were denied them by the New Years and they began to work and actually speak to another. The settlement is as follows:
The former queen Maria of Spain has been has been institutionalized, rather than executed, as her mental state would prevent such a conviction from happening. It has been revealed that her child, the missing infante, was indeed murdered by one of the Carlist stalwarts that stormed the palace. The Pope has arranged a state funeral, but the body has not been found and the men were executed by Maria's men some time ago. May they burn in hell.
*This is one of the reasons given, the other official reason given is the pope's inaction caused this to occur. It remains ambiguous.
- Carlos shall succeed as King of Hispania (the new title reflecting Portugal and The Low Countries’ inclusion into the realm), and his brothers shall be included in the line of succession until his own heir is born.
- Alfonso shall be Viceroy/Chancellor of the Cortes and permanent designated regent of Spain. He and his line shall be the Dukes of Olivares.
- The succession to the Spanish throne must now permanently sanctioned by the Pope, and any other claimants will lodge their evidence with the curia and the matter will be decided by the Pope alone. Succession wars are forever forbidden.
- Personal unions with foreign powers are also forbidden. If the Spanish monarch dies without issue, another one will be chosen by the Pope.
- Salic Law no longer, and never did apply to the Spanish throne. Spain was not a dominion the Franks, and merely/temporarily held a French dynasty. This is no longer true.
- Pope Pelagius III shall abdicate his position as Pope, as his own sons become the Spanish royal family*. A true conclave has been called, and a new pope will confirm Carlos's succession.
